If you are preparing for the IELTS exam, you have likely encountered the term IELTS band scores<\/strong> more times than you can count. But what do these numbers actually mean? Is a 6.5 “good”? What separates a Band 7 from a Band 8? And most importantly\u2014what score do you<\/em> actually need?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IELTS uses a 9-band scale to measure English language proficiency, with Band 1 representing a non-user and Band 9 representing an expert user. Unlike many other tests, there is no universal “passing” score. Instead, different universities, employers, and immigration authorities set their own minimum\u00a0IELTS band scores<\/strong>\u00a0requirements<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your overall band score is the average of your four section scores\u2014Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking\u2014rounded to the nearest half band<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
