About WritingChex: Free IELTS Writing Checker Tool

It all started with a simple frustration—one we knew too many students shared.

As students pursuing graduate studies ourselves, we knew how critical the IELTS exam was for opening new doors. However, when it came to preparing for the writing section, we were all alone, left with sample writings to follow or feedback that offered general tips. What we needed was something that would go beyond generic advice and actually help us become better writers. But that kind of feedback was either too expensive or too slow, and even when we got it, it often lacked the depth and clarity we were hoping for.

We weren't alone. Friends, classmates, and peers from around the world echoed the same story. So many of us—especially those coming from underrepresented or non-English-speaking backgrounds—faced the same barriers:

That's when we decided something had to change. We built WritingChex to give students the kind of support we once wished we had: fast, focused, and meaningful feedback based on the exam requirements. Whether you're aiming for a Band 6, 7, or trying to break through to a Band 8, we're here to help you get there.

Who are we?

We're three co-founders who have been friends for over a decade, united by a shared mission. Here's a little more about us:

Jalal

Jalal

LinkedIn

Assistant Professor in Information Systems at San Jose State University and a former IELTS instructor.

His mission is simple—helping and empowering anyone who asks. He's always on a personal challenge, with a streak of +100 days of doing something good.

The most disciplined person we know, Jalal's never late for a meeting (probably never in his life!). He's the kind of person who will keep going until the job is done—or until it's done.

Reza

Reza

LinkedIn

Global Freelancer who has mastered the art of listening and delivering. He's the quiet one who nods with a smile and says, "It's so interesting."

His love for coffee is legendary—he only sleeps to wake up and drink more! Need a feature change? Reza will code it in real-time, right there in the meeting.

His speed coding is only matched by his speed behind the wheel, though we recommend he stick to coding (given his average of three near-misses per drive!).

Hossein

Hossein

LinkedIn

Startup Strategist with a PhD in Business Intelligence. He turns complex data into clarity like a wizard in front of his laptop.

His curiosity is limitless—currently learning both Arabic and Bosnian, because... why not? Most likely traveling while you read this, Hossein's last name Mosafer (meaning traveler), says it all.

He and Jalal are not just co-founders but co-authors, with several published papers under their belts.

Our journey so far

We started small, with an idea that got us accepted into the Founders Institute Silicon Valley cohort, a 14-week startup accelerator where we refined our mission and built a product we truly believed in. Since then, over 11,150 users from more than 110 countries—many from developing nations—have signed up. Over 5,000 essays have been submitted and improved using our system.

What's next?

We are passionate about writing and believe it is essential for everyone—not just for delivering information, but for expressing the human essence. In a world increasingly dominated by AI, writing can sometimes feel irrelevant, but we believe its power to connect, communicate, and create remains as important as ever. We believe writing is an art that can't be replaced with AI.

That's why we're not stopping here. Our mission continues as we build more products to help everyone become better writers. We're committed to improving access to education and empowering individuals through the power of self-expression, one essay at a time.

How can you help us?

As we grew, we realized something even bigger: our users weren't just struggling with grammar—they were navigating complex, stressful, and expensive paths toward higher education abroad. That's why we made a bold decision:

We made WritingChex free for everyone.

Because we believe no one should be held back by financial barriers when chasing their dreams. Anyone, anywhere, can now use WritingChex to get the writing help they need. And anyone who believes in equal access to education—whether through donations, mentorship, or simply spreading the word—can contribute to the mission.
